In the Old Testament when Joshua is leading the people of Israel, they eventually arrive at the River Jordan. The Lord miraculously parts the water so they can pass with the Ark of the Covenant on dry land. The Lord then tells them to go get stones from the Jordan and place them down as a memorial so they would remember and could tell their children about the great thing the Lord had done for them. “That all the people of the earth might know the hand of the Lord, that it is mighty (Joshua 4:24).” There are many stories throughout the scriptures where people used stones to remember the goodness of God in their lives.
Elder Dale G. Renlund said, “Our Heavenly Father wants us to recall His and His Beloved Son’s goodness, not for Their own gratification but for the influence such remembrance has on us. By considering Their kindness, our perspective and understanding are enlarged. By reflecting on Their compassion, we become more humble, prayerful, and steadfast (General Conference, April 2020, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints).”
Hopefully, you can pick a word made from these stone letters that will help you remember the goodness of God in your life. These stone letters can be a lot like us. Each letter is individual and made one by one. Each is important and needed for the word to be whole. Each stone letter is rough around the edges and full of imperfections. Sometimes the rough edges need to be sanded and tamed. Sometimes the rounded letters are wobbly and need help standing up. Like the stones, we are rough around the edges, full of imperfections. Sometimes we need trials to tame our rough spots so we can come out smoother. Sometimes we need help standing. But, also like these letters, we are strong, individual, important, and needed.
